SUMMARY:PerfWeb #56 Donation after Cardiac Death - Preparing for Acute Aortic Emergencies and the Next Wave of Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:PerfWeb 56 — Segment: Inaugural Vanderbilt Medical Center; Department of Cardiovascular Surgery: Faculty Forum – Tammy Sparacino Journal Club – John Ingram Knowledge Nuggets \n \nVUMC Dept. Of CV Surgery Faculty Forum:\nHosted by Jordan Hoffman\, MD and Matt Warhoover\, CCP Donation after Cardiac Death (DCD): Expanding the donor pool for patients needing heart transplantation. \n \nTammy Sparacino Journal Club:\nCommentary: Fool me once\, shame on you\, fool me twice\, shame on me—preparing for acute aortic emergencies and the next wave of the COVID-19 pandemic How has delayed care from COVID created serious cardiac emergencies? \n \nJohn Ingram Knowledge Nuggets: Magnesium\nThis perfusion meeting is approved for 3.4 Category 1 CEU by American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) \n“The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has completely altered the healthcare landscape within a very short period owing to the rapid influx of patients requiring medical attention related to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection displacing patients needing other types of medical attention. Entire hospital systems were restructured to accommodate the intensive needs of patients with COVID-19\, and hospital capacity was quickly overwhelmed in terms of actual space and the necessary personnel. Although routine care and elective procedures could be safely postponed\, the resource-intensive pandemic limited the ability of hospitals to easily manage critical medical conditions such as acute aortic emergencies. The limitations put both patients and healthcare workers at risk by the potential for nosocomial transmission of the virus. In this issue of JTCVS\, Mehta et al1 have presented a consensus algorithm for triaging and treating patients presenting with acute aortic emergencies during the COVID-19 pandemic. The algorithm aims to minimize the risk of exposure and transmission when treating patients in this emergent setting. The lessons learned in this pandemic should prepare us for a potential second wave or any future pandemics.  – Link to article here \nRegister and watch for free @ https://library.perfusioneducation.com\nGet our Perfusion App – https://perfusioneducation.com/perfusion-app/\nIV Dosage and Rate Calculator – https://mediweb.us/iv-medication-calculator\nSee Our Schedule: https://perfweb.us/webinar-schedule/
