SUMMARY:The Factors That Influence DO2 During CPB: Why Do You Need a Perfusionist?
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis program explores the factors that influence oxygen delivery to the tissues. This program examines the “art” of perfusion and how the perfusionist uses available data and techniques to provide sufficient perfusion and oxygenation to the patient while permitting the operative field to remain decompressed and dry so that the surgeon can complete the operation successfully. DESCRIPTION:The Effect of CPB on Platelets. Preoperative C-reactive Protein. Blood Storage.\nThis program is apprved for 3.4 Category 1 CEU by ABCP\n \nVanderbilt University Medical Center; Department of CV Surgery: Faculty Forum The effect of Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB) on Platelets Program will discuss how the cardiopulmonary bypass circuit interacts with blood components and directly affects platelet counts and functionality. Faculty: Matt Warhoover\, CCP Jordan Hoffman\, MD Joey Lepore\, CCP John Poland\, CCP \n \n Tammy Sparacino Journal Club: Preoperative C-reactive protein as a predictor of postoperative acute kidney injury in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting. C-reactive protein is a well-known marker of inflammation and may be preoperatively elevated in the absence of infection in adult cardiac surgery patients\, indicating a baseline inflammatory process. We conducted a literature search to assess the available evidence on whether there is an association between preoperative C-reactive protein and acute kidney injury after coronary artery bypass grafting. Included only were observational studies which investigated this association. \nJohn Ingram Knowledge Nuggets: Blood Storage Effects on the Blood Components \nRegister and watch for free @ https://library.perfusioneducation.com Get our Perfusion App – https://perfusioneducation.com/perfusion-app/ IV Dosage and Rate Calculator – https://mediweb.us/iv-medication-calculator/ Subscribe to our podcast: Apple Podcasts – https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-perfweb-podcast/id1549315399 Google Podcasts – https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkLnBvZGJlYW4uY29tL3BlcmZ3ZWIvZmVlZC54bWw%3D Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/7FWOk2uUVKpzvqK1sxz3Lt

It has struck me in recent years that despite the advances in technology of all sorts\, our current heart-lung machines still seem relatively large\, complicated masses of machinery and tubing that occupy a relatively large footprint in the cardiac operating room.”\n\n\n\nJohn Ingram Knowledge Nuggets:\nHow Does Protamine Really Neutralize Heparin?\n\n  \n\nGet our Perfusion App – https://perfusioneducation.com/perfusion-app/\nIV Dosage and Rate Calculator – https://mediweb.us/iv-medication-calculator/\nSubscribe to our podcast:\nApple Podcasts – https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-perfweb-podcast/id1549315399\nGoogle Podcasts – https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkLnBvZGJlYW4uY29tL3BlcmZ3ZWIvZmVlZC54bWw%3D\nSpotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/7FWOk2uUVKpzvqK1sxz3Lt\n\nSee Our Schedule: https://perfweb.us/webinar-schedule/

SUMMARY:PerfWeb #61 ECMO platform overview: Cost\, safety\, transportability. Acute Hypoxemic Respiratory Failure. Atrial Septal Defects
DESCRIPTION:PerfWeb 61 — Vanderbilt University Medical Center; Department of CV Surgery: Faculty Forum – Tammy Sparacino Journal Club – John Ingram Knowledge Nuggets \n \n\nVanderbilt University Medical Center; Department of CV Surgery: Faculty Forum – ECMO platform overview: Cost\, safety\, transportability\n\nFaculty:\nJ. Hoffman\, MD\,\nMatt Warhoover\, CCP\,\nA. Lepore\, CCP\n\n\n  \n\nTammy Sparacino Journal Club – Lower or Higher Oxygenation Targets for Acute Hypoxemic Respiratory Failure\nPatients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure in the intensive care unit (ICU) are treated with supplemental oxygen\, but the benefits and harms of different oxygenation targets are unclear. We hypothesized that using a lower target for partial pressure of arterial oxygen (Pao2) would result in lower mortality than using a higher target.\nIn this multicenter trial\, we randomly assigned 2928 adult patients who had recently been admitted to the ICU (≤12 hours before randomization) and who were receiving at least 10 liters of oxygen per minute in an open system or had a fraction of inspired oxygen of at least 0.50 in a closed system to receive oxygen therapy targeting a Pao2 of either 60 mm Hg (lower-oxygenation group) or 90 mm Hg (higher-oxygenation group) for a maximum of 90 days. The primary outcome was death within 90 days.\nAt 90 days\, 618 of 1441 patients (42.9%) in the lower-oxygenation group and 613 of 1447 patients (42.4%) in the higher-oxygenation group had died (adjusted risk ratio\, 1.02; 95% confidence interval\, 0.94 to 1.11; P=0.64). At 90 days\, there was no significant between-group difference in the percentage of days that patients were alive without life support or in the percentage of days they were alive after hospital discharge. The percentages of patients who had new episodes of shock\, myocardial ischemia\, ischemic stroke\, or intestinal ischemia were similar in the two groups (P=0.24).\nFaculty:\nTammy Sparacino\, CCP\nJohn Ingram\, CCP\nJoe Basha\, CCP\n\n\n\n\n  \n\nJohn Ingram Knowledge Nuggets – Atrial Septal Defects\nFaculty:\nJohn Ingram\, CCP\nTammy Sparacino\, CCP\nJoe Basha\, CCP \nThis perfusion meeting is approved for 3.4 Category 1 CEU by American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP)\nRegister and watch for free @ https://library.perfusioneducation.com\nGet our Perfusion App – https://perfusioneducation.com/perfusion-app/\nIV Dosage and Rate Calculator – https://mediweb.us/iv-medication-calculator/\nSee Our Schedule: https://perfweb.us/webinar-schedule/

SUMMARY:PerfWeb #56 Donation after Cardiac Death - Preparing for Acute Aortic Emergencies and the Next Wave of Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:PerfWeb 56 — Segment: Inaugural Vanderbilt Medical Center; Department of Cardiovascular Surgery: Faculty Forum – Tammy Sparacino Journal Club – John Ingram Knowledge Nuggets \n \nVUMC Dept. Of CV Surgery Faculty Forum:\nHosted by Jordan Hoffman\, MD and Matt Warhoover\, CCP Donation after Cardiac Death (DCD): Expanding the donor pool for patients needing heart transplantation. \n \nTammy Sparacino Journal Club:\nCommentary: Fool me once\, shame on you\, fool me twice\, shame on me—preparing for acute aortic emergencies and the next wave of the COVID-19 pandemic How has delayed care from COVID created serious cardiac emergencies? \n \nJohn Ingram Knowledge Nuggets: Magnesium\nThis perfusion meeting is approved for 3.4 Category 1 CEU by American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) \n“The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has completely altered the healthcare landscape within a very short period owing to the rapid influx of patients requiring medical attention related to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection displacing patients needing other types of medical attention. Entire hospital systems were restructured to accommodate the intensive needs of patients with COVID-19\, and hospital capacity was quickly overwhelmed in terms of actual space and the necessary personnel. Although routine care and elective procedures could be safely postponed\, the resource-intensive pandemic limited the ability of hospitals to easily manage critical medical conditions such as acute aortic emergencies. The limitations put both patients and healthcare workers at risk by the potential for nosocomial transmission of the virus. In this issue of JTCVS\, Mehta et al1 have presented a consensus algorithm for triaging and treating patients presenting with acute aortic emergencies during the COVID-19 pandemic. The algorithm aims to minimize the risk of exposure and transmission when treating patients in this emergent setting. The lessons learned in this pandemic should prepare us for a potential second wave or any future pandemics.  – Link to article here \nRegister and watch for free @ https://library.perfusioneducation.com\nGet our Perfusion App – https://perfusioneducation.com/perfusion-app/\nIV Dosage and Rate Calculator – https://mediweb.us/iv-medication-calculator\nSee Our Schedule: https://perfweb.us/webinar-schedule/

SUMMARY:46TH Annual Congress of The Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists SCPS
DESCRIPTION:We are living in unprecedented times\, which inevitably lead to unprecedented circumstances and difficult decisions. It is with great regret that I have to announce that this year’s Annual Congress of The Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists will not be taking place in physical form. The decision has been taken by the executive committee after full discussion and careful consideration. We have a duty of care not only to you\, our colleagues\, but also to our patients. We feel that we cannot risk the possibility of causing an outbreak of Covid-19 within our professional group as this would not only endanger the health and welfare of us\, but also potentially affect the capacity for cardiac surgery across Great Britain and Ireland. \nWe have moved the meeting online and are happy to invite you to our 2020 Webinar and AGM. We look forward to (virtually) seeing as many of you as possible over the 6th and 7th of November to enjoy a full academic programme and the Annual General Meetings of our Society and College. \nOur registration information is shown below.
